Further Training and Testing
For those motorcyclists who wish to become really proficient riders, passing the practical on- road test is simply one step along the way. It is often said that you only begin to learn to drive/ride after you pass your test. Unfortunately, accident figures certainly seem to confirm that far too many people dont heed this advice! For those that do wish to develop their skills an exciting and interesting world of achievement awaits. Forget the rubbish talked about the Sam Browne belts, reputedly worn by boring old farts over their leather anoraks. That image went out years ago! Modern advanced certificate holders include everyone from ordinary riders of medium powered machines to, increasingly, the cream of the crop of super-bikers sporting the latest designer labelled equipment. Having mastered the Motorcycling Manual, the rider is now introduced to Roadcraft, the manual of the British police motorcyclist. For on-road riding there is currently no higher award than the police 'class one' certificate and these days the service is only too happy to share with the public the secrets of the most highly regarded professional riders in the world. Practical benefits of further training may include insurance discounts and other incentives. There are several nationally recognised certificates to aim for and a number of training bodies offer their own brand of rider development. The Motorcycle Rider Training Website contains many examples of rider development and advanced training schemes. See our Nationwide Datebase of Training Schools above.
